Costumes and props

Real Recognise Real merchandise. Will be easily obtained because the artist have supplies of it.

Lighters. Many of the people involved in filming will have lighters on them at the time. If not they can be purchased from newsagents for around £1.
Cigarette/spliff will be rolled using tobacco, wrizzler and a filter/roach. All these can be purchased together from a newsagents for around £6.

Locations

All filming will take place with Droitwich town centre and suburbs.

This is an ideal location for a number of reasons ...

It is where the artists are based so is easy for them to access and be there when we need them (we will travel there by car).

Many areas of Droitwich match our desired mise en scene perfectly giving an urban, anti-establishment feel.

Much of our filming will take place in and around the housing estate of Westlands. This does not require permission.

Health and safety

Performers and casting

Chris Dayus (Crissy Dee). One of the front members of 'Real Recognise Real' and will be used a lot during the course of the video.

This performer is suitable because he is the actual artist who performs the song our video is based around.

This gives our video an edge because he will be very used to the track and the type of environment (comfortable with filming etc).

Paul Stokes (Stokezee) (pictured on the right) is the artist who feature with Chris on the track (sings the chorus and has a verse).

He is suitable for exactly the same reasons as Chris because he is used to this type of situation which will benefit us in terms of lip syncing quality etc.

We asked ourselves the question. 'Will these artists be reliable?' We have spoken to them on several occasions and told them we need to do filming towards the end of December and throughout January. They have both given us their word that they are not part of any other projects that may effect us and will be available for shooting when ever we need them.

Our video will also include a number of extras who are friends of the artist and may have cameos in our video.

Audience focus group

We carried out an audience focus group online (Facebook) to gain important qualitative feedback which may cause us to adapt/change our ideas for the draft video.

Focus group contents ...

-Showed the audience music videos which are similar in different way ie concept, shots etc to see how they reacted and what they liked about it.

-Gave the target audience the opportunity to listen to the track we are using in the project. Asked them to relate what they heard to viusals (Synaesthesia and imagery). This is good good way of generating ideas to aid production of our video.

Target audience research

Target audience profile - Predominantly males aged between 18-25, although some aspects will appeal to a female audience of around the same age.

A focus group on Facebook will be the ideal environment for qualitative research as it is full of online users who fit the audience profile.

Our music video pitch, performed in front of members of a target audience, gave us mixed feedback.

Whilst some said the concept for the video was very achievable and solid. The main criticism was that the idea was to generic and too much like other video which would not make it appealing.

Time plan - Final video

Draft editing will be finished by the 27th Jan at the latest.

This will leave us with a couple of weeks to use feedback from teachers ect to improve upon anything we are not happy with.

This gives us around 8 lesson which is over 8 hours to finalise editing.

Final video deadline 10th Feb.

Time managment (Filming and editing for the draft video)

Draft deadline 27th January 2012
Final video deadline 10th February 2012

Production work for the draft video will most likely begin week beginning Monday the 19th December.

Travel to Droitwich on Monday afternoon/evening - Meet with the artist and go to the location - Begin preliminary filming - Rough ideas from our plan etc.

Book a camera out if possible for over the xmas holiday to allow plenty of time and freedom for filming.
(break up for xmas on Tuesday the 20th so book early)

Wednesday the 21st December - A lot of time after college to spend most of the day doing more accurate filming and gathering a large amount the footage we will need to edit the draft video.

Over the weekend of the 24/25th will be when we finalise the filming s get any shots we have remaining.
(Obviously the 25th is xmas day so no filming will be done then)

Editing the draft video will then begin in lesson time on the first week back after xmas. Since some will will hopefully be done over xmas this will give us much more time to make sure we are totally happy with the shots and that we have got everything we need.

This will leave us with around three weeks of editing time during class (and free periods if needs be) which should allow a good job to be done.

Digipak research

Friday, 4 November 2011

This advert is effective partly because it has struck the right balance between minimalistic and over the top. The name of the artist is is a large font which will immediately capture audience attention. All the key information such as time, date, venue, ticket prices etc is included without overloading the audience with info.
The use of a white background may appear slightly boring to some, but it actually draws more attention to the artist which will create more interest and personalise the advert to relate with the audience.
The contrast of colours included within the text may make the advert more visually appealing, but it gives it a slightly amateur effect which may put a potential audience off.
The diagonal design in the background gives off the idea that the artist is emergent and exciting which may attract the desired target audience.

Redundancy and entropy

Redundancy - Where something is very conventional/normal and matches stereotypes.
Entropy - Something strays from the usual conventions and provokes thought and controversy.

Redundancy and entropy in relation to our music video ...

Our music video will be fairly redundant. Music videos of our genre (hip hop/rap etc) have very similar videos with generic conventions.

Son Of Kick - Playing the Villain

The use of the camera seen in this music video is very conventional ...

-Use of an establishing shot to give an impression on the location(s)

image

-Extensive use of close ups/ mid close ups which are used to encourage the audience to focus particularly on what is in front of them.

Son Of Kick - Playing the Villain

The genre is clearly established from the outset of this video. It is made clear to the audience that it has a very urban/grime feel and will appeal to fans of R&B as well as drum and bass.

The mise en scene goes some way to making the genre clear to the audience. The location is very stereotypical for this type of track (Run down block of flats with monotone colours) which really helps establish a certain mood.

Costumes include stereotypical garments for both the genre and the age of the actors in the video, tracksuits, hoodies etc.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OZ6G7qwjom4&feature=player_detailpage#t=154s

There are three types of music video.

-Disjunctive (Some parts of the video are literal to the lyrics but others are not).
-Literal (The whole video matches the lyrics).
-Amplifying (The video has nothing to do with the lyrics and follows a different narrative completely).

Tempa T's Next Hype is mostly a literal video as almost every second of the video has a direct relation to the lyrics. (See in the video url above). "Kick off your HDTV from the stand" -kicks Tv from stand-

The mise en scene is a huge feature in this video.

Surroundings such as grim streets and a gym matches the grime genre and the narrative.

Costume is another crucial part of mise en scene as we see Tempz wearing common/casual clothing such as tracksuits ect. These compliment other aspects of the mise en scene as well as the genre.

Music video analysis - Tempa T Next Hype

One of the most noticeable effects the the extended lens which creates the circular effect.

The circular effect connotes the idea that the world of the video is slightly twisted and Tempz is in his own little world.

As seen is this particular shot many takes include mid-close ups of Tempz which creates focus around him.

Andrew Goodwin's ideas

Andrew Goodwin identifies five key aspects of music videos that we the audience should look out for ...

- Synaesthesia (seeing the sounds in your head). This is a relation of music and lyrics to visual concepts.
- Narrative and performance. Goodwin explains that music videos should ignore common narrative as it is important in their role of 'advertising'.
- Star image. Describing the development of the star over time through the narrative.
- Relation of visuals to the song ...
(Illustrative - Narrative matches the lyrics and genre).
(Amplifying - Meanings and effects are manipulated and constantly shown).
(Disjunctive - This is where the meaning of the song is completely ignored).

Production

During this task the most prominent thing that I learnt was that working as part of a larger group with 7/8 people makes the filming process much more difficult than in a smaller group. This means that communication needs to be clear between the group in order for the project to be a success.

Production: Digital Technology

Having done Media at AS level, there was at least a basic understanding of production technology used within the subject. At first there was a few problems with the edit suite: Premier Pro. As the original clips were not saved in the correct area (D drive) this meant when I loaded the project for the second time the media was not available to me and I had to import the clips again.

I had also forgotten the full process of exporting the final edit from Premier Pro, and uploading it to You Tube which meant I needed help but means that I am now able to do this correctly.

During the A2 year I would like to become totally competent at using the Edit suite. Although I have a good understanding of it now, there will be things I still need to pick up.

Research and Planning

The planning task which I found the most useful was the story board. This is because it made the filming process much easier as it gave us an idea of how the camera should be positioned and where cast should be placed in the frame.

I feel that Planning would have been more effective if we had considered areas such as props and where they would be placed during filming. Since there was no clear plan for this it meant it took time away from filming and had to be done in the last minute.

The kind of planning I expect to be doing during A2 year include ...

-Shot lists
-Shooting scripts
-Storyboard
-Props list
-Casting
-Research of current media
-Location planning

Introduction

The task I have been carrying out is a re-creation of the music video for the Busted track, 'That's what I go to school for'.
